Typo Film

Hollywood taught us that a picture can tell a thousand words. But we know from reading literature that a word can tell a thousand pictures. Typo Film brings these two thoughts together, combining the power of the image and the power of the written word.
Whether in video clips, commercials, title sequences of feature films or flash movie on the web, moving type is becoming immensely popular and, by adding the dimension ‘time', it is even changing the face of graphic design.

Icons
The typo film is a whole new cinematic genre, exploring typography in the broadest sense. All the images that have become icons through fame, repetition and recognition can be seen and used as a form of typography. A (new) meaning of typography is an added value for the language in which we communicate. Icons such as a portrait of Barack Obama, an Apple logo or the sound of an incoming e-mail are signs that are just as readable as a word that is made up of letters and can literally be read.

The language of identity has come to determine our (visual) culture. Now we can read images and view languages. The typo film consists of recognizable language and signs animated so as to communicate.

Web films on the big screen
Upload Cinema, the Graphic Design Museum and International Film Festival Breda selected the best of online typographical movies. From 152 films entered, Mieke Gerritzen, director of the Graphic Design Museum and guest curator of this project, selected 38 films for the big screen.
